The roses were delivered to her office. Her desk already a mess of paperwork. She barely acknowledged the delivery man when he placed the long-stemmed red roses on her desk. She just mumbled a thank you. The gesture, normally a pleasure, felt… pointless.

She ran her fingers through her hair, the simple act already tiring. The roses, perfectly arranged, radiated a fragrance that seemed to cling to the air and further exacerbate her feeling of sluggishness.

She pushed back from her desk, the chair screeching on the tile. The roses were lovely, she knew, but she felt incapable of experiencing their beauty.
